Today, everyone is drowning in the data and data science has become an indispensable role in all industries globally. Data Science is an interdisciplinary field about processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from large volumes of data in various forms, either structured or unstructured. It is a continuation of rapidly evolving data analysis fields such as data mining and predictive analytics, as well as Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD). Even though the field is growing at a rapid pace, there lies scarcity of well-trained professionals who can study data in a scientific manner and retrieve actionable insights and develop deployable data-science products.
IIM Shillong, as an institute has taken many initiatives to promote data science education and research activities. As part of this initiative, faculties and scholars at IIM Shillong are working on cutting-edge data science problems pertaining to the areas of finance, marketing, HR, operations, social media, and economics. Advanced descriptive, predictive and prescriptive methods are being deployed to address these problems; some of these methods are : Statistical computing, Fuzzy logic, Social network analysis, Network mining, Text mining, Linear & Non-linear Optimizations, Time Series Forecasting, Machine Learning, Evolutionary Computation, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Digital Analytics, and Social Media & Web Analytics. Faculties and research scholars also have published their works in prestigious journals such as, Journal of Information and Knowledge Management, Knowledge-Based Systems, The Journal of Prediction Markets, PLoS ONE, Journal of Systems and Information Technology , Applied Soft Computing, Swarm and Evolutionary Computation, Computers and Operations Research, The Journal of Supercomputing, VINE Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems, Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems, Annals of Data Science.
As part of the educational initiatives in data science, IIM Shillong has launched a 3-months Certificate Course in Data Science. The course would be offered on weekend basis in blended mode (both virtual and classroom) at the Guwahati center of IIM Shillong. The course is designed to prepare aspiring data scientists for entry into the industry. The course has been created after thorough research of industry expectations from the new data science job aspirants. This is a rigorous 12-weekend program with over 140+ hours of intensive learning. The program is open for students pursuing any degree in graduation (with mathematics as a subject in graduation), graduates (with mathematics as a subject in graduation), working professionals, and entrepreneurs.
