AdtU Signs MoU with Yi Guwahati
The first Miyawaki Forest at AdtU has been established in collaboration between Young Indians (Yi) and the University. An MoU was signed between Yuva Vertical of Yi Guwahati Chapter and Assam Down Town University.
Yi Guwahati Chapter launched its 1st Miyawaki Forest Project in Assam on October 09, at Assam Downtown University at Panikhaiti.
The project aims to restore landscapes and and help build the natural ecosystem of the region.
Miyawaki is a unique technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, which involves planting number of native species in the same area. The technique ensures that the plants grow upwards than sidewards. It is an idea of building dense, native forests ensuring that the growth of the plant is 10 times faster and 30 times denser.
The project was inaugurated by Dr. Satyendra Singh, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (HQ) in presence of Dr. N.C. Talukdar, VC, Assam Down Town University and Pawan Kumar, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, (Biodiversity and Climate Change).
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Singh, said, “This is a good initiative by Yi. Assam Down Town University can be a model for industries who can replicate this project to conserve our bio diversity, help in soil conservation, etc.”
Joutishman Dutta, Past Chair, Yi Guwahati Chapter said, “Yi Guwahati Chapter under this initiative invites people and organizations to partner in this movement. We shall share technical knowhow and handhold Miyawaki Projects across the state.”
Abhijit Nahata, (Climate Change Chair), Yi Guwahati Chapter said , “The Core team of Yi Guwahati Chapter have been thoroughly involved in the entire process of the initiative, starting from identifying the place, resource persons and investing time to understand the sustainability of the of the project. The Chapter also plans to cover more area under Miyawaki Forest Project in the near future.”
Young Indians (Yi) is a movement for Indian Youth to converge, lead, co-create and influence India’s future. As an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a non-government, not-for-profit, industry led and industry managed organization playing a proactive role in India’s development process.
The organization has created a platform for young Indians to work towards realizing a dream of a developed nation. Young Indians launched its Guwahati Chapter in the year 9 June 2009.
Yi has identified six areas of action for the year, including tree plantation with main focus on building of Miyawaki Forest, soil conservation, waste management, water conservation and natural disaster management which can be taken forward across its Chapter network.
The event was attended by Hamad M.A. R. Berlashker, Past Chair, Bidita Das, Chair Thalir, Yash Deorah, Chair, Yuva, Ankit Jajodia (Member) and Nishant Kejriwal (Member) of the Yi Guwahati Chapter.
